I grew up in South Florida, studied art at Cooper Union in the seventies, Chinese painting and calligraphy in Taiwan in the eighties. I then dropped art to become, among other things, a literary translator and literature professor, the latter for almost twenty years. In a leap of faith, I quit my job and returned to Florida in 2015 to pursue art full-time. I settled in Ft. White because it is the home of the Ichetucknee, one of the longest spring fed rivers in the world and one of the most beautiful corners of a beautiful state. It was at the water's edge I honed the "pine noir" style of my graphite drawings, many of which were started near sunset and not completed until it was too dark to see the page, a practice that introduces an element of chance. Though I occasionally work in pastel and other media, I gravitate to graphite because I love its velvety blacks and thousand shades of silver and gray.
